QUALITY ASSURANCE & TRAINING UNIT
The Quality Assurance (QA) and Training Unit aims to produce competent, qualified and motivated people in the field of tropical infectious diseases through providing excellent training and development to meet the needs of learners, delivered by highly competent TIDREC specialist staff. TIDREC aims to provide its best quality either for its benchtop research activities or among its contribution towards the industry and community. Currently TIDREC has received accreditation and certification including MS ISO 9001:20XX (oversee by QMEC at University of Malaya) and MS ISO 17025:2005 (Laboratory Testing and Calibration) for molecular and serological testing of dengue virus. Currently TIDREC is working towards the accreditation on MS ISO/IEC 17043:2010 (Conformity assessment - General requirements for proficiency testing) and MS ISO/IEC 13485:2016 (Medical Device) as part of its collaborative activity with the industry.
In this unit, we provide different training programs to the local and international researchers particularly training programs on biosafety and biosecurity, molecular testing, vaccinology, antiviral and protein therapeutics development etc. The biosafety and biosecurity training program is envisioned to educate the scientific community at all levels to better understand and appreciate the needs for biosafety and biosecurity controls, particularly when the work involves infectious and potentially infectious agents and microbial toxins.
Since 2010, TIDREC has been successfully trained more than 500 participants at its Biosafety & Biosecurity Training Facility (Mock BSL2 and BSL3 Laboratories), located at Level 20, Wisma R&D, UM. The trainings consist on primarily hands-on practical sessions to better help the laboratory personnel to learn and practice ways of handling and managing the infectious agents safely and securely. The training program is in line with the Malaysia Ministry of Health’s mission i.e. to generate a responsive public health system in the country through identifying, responding, and managing infectious disease outbreaks in a timely manner, without discounting the biosafety and biosecurity aspects. The content complies to the national and international requirements such as the International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005, Malaysia Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity Policy and Guideline (MOH, 1st edition, 2015) and University Malaya Policy and Procedures on Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity (1st edition, 2015).
