RESEARCH & TRAINING FACILITIES

As a centre of excellence for tropical infectious diseases, TIDREC is well equipped with the necessary facilities to perform biosurveillance activities and pathogen screening through next generation sequencing, microarray and Luminex assay. With a fully certified modular and mobile Biosafety Level 3 laboratory, working on selected agents such as Nipah virus, Brucella and other emerging infectious diseases is possible even on the fields.

The Biosafety & Biosecurity Training Program at TIDREC is aimed to increase awareness on the safe conduct of highly infectious pathogens in the laboratory. Laboratory personnel must adhere to the Good Microbiological Practices and Procedures (GMPP) to minimize the risk of laboratory-acquired infection (LAI). At the same time, personnel must be alert to the potential biosecurity breach of their valuable biological materials (VBM). The training program encompasses both theory and hands-on practical sessions at our Mock BSL3 Training Facility, Wisma R&D, Universiti Malaya. The comprehensive training modules provide opportunity for participants to experience the actual simulation of working in a high-level biocontainment facility such as BSL3 laboratory. The laboratory exercises include emergency responses, biological spill management and gross contamination. The training program is suitable for all levels within the scientific community including post-graduate students, laboratory and healthcare workers, researchers as well as policymakers and relevant stakeholders.

TIDREC is an accredited testing laboratory for MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation for its services in the hope to better serve the community.
